Lye safety is the most critical aspect of cold process soap making. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a caustic substance that can cause severe chemical burns.

The Chemistry of Lye

Sodium hydroxide is a strong base with a pH of approximately 14 when dissolved in water. The exothermic reaction between lye and water can generate temperatures up to 80-90C.

Proper Dilution Techniques

The Golden Rule: Always add lye to water, never water to lye.

  • Measure cold water in a heat-safe, non-aluminum container 2. Weigh lye separately in a dry container 3. Add lye to water in small increments 4. Stir gently and allow to cool to 40-50C
  • Protective Equipment

  • Chemical splash goggles - Nitrile gloves - Long sleeves and closed-toe shoes - Dedicated lye mixing area
  • Emergency Handling Procedures

    Skin Contact: Flush with running water for 15 minutes. Eye Contact: Flush eyes for 15 minutes, seek medical attention. Spills: Neutralize with baking soda, then clean with vinegar-water solution.

    Always have a first aid kit nearby. Never leave lye unattended.
