Cold process soap making involves working with sodium hydroxide (lye), a caustic chemical that can cause severe burns. This safety guide covers everything you need to know to work safely and confidently.
Understanding Lye (Sodium Hydroxide)
Lye (NaOH) is the chemical that converts oils into soap through saponification. It's a strong base that dissolves organic tissue on contact, generates heat when mixed with water, produces fumes that irritate the respiratory system, and causes irreversible chemical burns.
Respect lye. It's not optional.
Protective Equipment
Minimum Required: Safety goggles (chemical splash goggles, not just glasses), nitrile gloves (latex degrades with lye exposure), long sleeves, closed-toe shoes, and a respirator (optional but recommended).
Recommended: Apron or lab coat, face shield for additional eye protection, ventilation fan for indoor workspace.
Workspace Setup
Location: Well-ventilated area with open windows or a fan. Away from children and pets. On a stable, heat-resistant surface. Near running water for immediate rinsing.
Equipment Placement: Lye and water on one side, oils on the other, immersion blender in the middle, vinegar nearby for spill neutralization, scale in the center.
What NOT to Keep Nearby: Aluminum (reacts violently with lye), other metals (can produce hydrogen gas), plastic containers (some melt or degrade), and food items.
Lye Solution Preparation
The Golden Rule: Always add lye to water. Never add water to lye.
Adding water to lye causes a violent eruption of lye solution that can splash and cause severe burns. Adding lye to water is controlled and safe.
Steps: Measure water in a heat-safe container, measure lye separately, add lye to water slowly while stirring gently, the solution will heat up to 80°C (this is normal), set aside in a safe place to cool to 40–50°C before using.
Never breathe lye fumes. If you're indoors, open a window or use a fan.
Emergency Procedures
Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing immediately, flush with running water for at least 15 minutes, do NOT use vinegar on skin, seek medical attention.
Eye Contact: Flush eyes immediately with running water for at least 15 minutes, hold eyelids open, do NOT use vinegar in the eyes, seek emergency medical attention.
Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting, rinse mouth with water, seek emergency medical attention immediately, bring the lye container.
Workspace Cleanup
After Soap Making: Clean all equipment with hot water and vinegar, wipe down surfaces, store lye securely in a sealed container labeled clearly, dispose of lye solution by diluting with large amount of water and pouring down the drain with running water, wash hands thoroughly.
Lye Storage: Store in a sealed container (HDPE plastic or glass), label clearly as SODIUM HYDROXIDE — CAUSTIC, keep in a cool, dry place away from moisture and heat, lock the cabinet especially if children are in the home, never store near food.
